"ISINST30 caused a GPF in module INS0433.MP @ 0015:000039D3"

Problem:

This error may occur when installing Express for Windows™ 2.30 (or greater) on a computer running the Windows 98® operating system. The error would occur near the end of installing the 3rd disk. The text of the error message is:

"ISINST30 caused a GPF in module INS0433.MP @ 0015:000039D3"

Solution:

There are two possible solutions:

  • Solution 1 is to disable the MSWHEEL driver.

    • Close all applications that are open.

    • Restart Windows 98.

    • Then, make sure all other applications are closed before proceeding.

    • Press CTRL-ALT-DEL once (and only once!!). This should bring up the Close Program box.

    • Highlight the item called MSWHEEL and then click the button for End Task.

    • Attempt to install Express for Windows again. If successful, restart Windows.

  • Solution 2 is to start Windows 98 in Safe Mode. Please note that this solution is for Standalone installations only.

    • Start Windows in Safe Mode in one of two ways:

      • Restart the computer and, when you hear the first beep, press the F8 key.

      • Or, hold down the Control key while Windows 98 restarts.

    • One of these methods should get you to the Windows 98 Start menu. From the Start menu choose the Safe Mode option. Please note that starting in Safe Mode may change the screen resolution.  Your icons may appear larger or smaller than normal.

    • Install Express for Windows and then restart Windows 98 as usual.

The operation of Express for Windows itself does not seem to be affected by the MSWHEEL driver.  The conflict appears to be only with the MSWHEEL driver and the 3rd party installation program that we have licensed.
