Express for Windows™ Error:  "ISINST30 Caused a General Protection Fault in Module …"

Problem:

The following error message may occur during the installation of Express:

ISINST30.DLL caused General Protection Fault in Module module name at xxxx:xxxx.

Solution 1:

A program or utility that conflicts with installation is being launched when Windows® boots.  Check the WIN.INI file (near the beginning of the file) for a line that reads:

  • Load=

If the line has entries, add a new Load= statement that is blank ( i.e. - has nothing after the = sign ) and put a semicolon ( ; ) in front of the original Load= statement.

Make a backup copy of the WIN.INI file before making any changes!

Restart Windows and try the installation again.

Solution 2:

This error be related to the MSWHEEL driver for Windows 98®.

Either:

  • Disable the MSWHEEL function temporarily, or

  • Reboot Windows 98 in SAFE mode

and then try the installation again.

Solution 3:

On a Windows 95 or 98 system:

  • Press CTRL ALT DEL to activate the Close Program box.  A list of the currently active applications will be displayed.

  • It is possible that one of the applications listed in the Close Program box is causing the problem. If so, ending that particular task may solve the problem.  However, if you are not familiar with the items listed in the Close Program box, we suggest that you consult your system administrator or internal technical support staff before shutting down tasks in this manner.  If you should choose to try this method of resolving the problem:

    • Close and restart Windows

    • Press CTRL ALT DEL to open the Close Program box

    • Do an End Task on the function you wish to shut down.

    • Reinstall Express for Windows.

    • If successful, shut down and restart Windows.
