Express for Windows™ Error: "GetDBVersion Failed. Database upgrade failed." SHARE.EXE not loaded. Could not lock file c:\expressw\data\UPGRADE.MDB

Express for Windows™ Error: "GetDBVersion Failed. Database upgrade failed." SHARE.EXE not loaded.
Could not lock file c:\expressw\data\UPGRADE.MDB

Problem:

The following error message occurs while installing Express for Windows version 2.30 (or greater) on a computer running the Windows® 3.1 operating system:

"GetDBVersion Failed. Database upgrade failed." SHARE.EXE not loaded.
Could not lock file c:\expressw\data\UPGRADE.MDB

Express is being installed as a Standalone application. However, it does not seem to matter if the station is actually connected to a network or not.

Solution:
  • Either edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add SHARE.EXE or edit the SYSTEM.INI file and add Device=VSHARE.386.

    • If adding SHARE.EXE to the AUTOEXEC, the line should read:

      • C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100

    • If modifying the SYSTEM.INI file.

      • Make a backup of the file first!

      • Copy the file VSHARE.386 file from the Express subdirectory to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

      • Edit the SYSTEM.INI file and add the line Device=VSHARE.386 to the [Enhanced] section.

  • Reboot the system after editing the Autoexec.BAT file - or - close and restart Windows 3.1 if editing the System.INI file.

  • Delete the AMSEXPW.INI file that is located in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

  • Remove the Express directory that was created by the failed install.   It will usually be named either \EXPRESSW or \AMSEXPW.

  • Reinstall Express for Windows.
