| Problem: |
|
The following error message occurs while installing Express for Windows version 2.30 or greater.
The message "Upgrading Database" is
displayed and then the error message appears. |
| Solution 1: |
|
The error message indicates that the value of the TEMP system environment variable is a blank. Windows® 95/98 will not normally allow that to occur. However, the following variables have been encountered on systems where a user login script or system login script is used to set the TEMP variable after Windows had already booted.. The problem appears to be related to a line being processed by the system login script that reads:
This sets an environment variable value for TEMP that is not valid for Windows 95/98.. Please Note: The requirement for a valid
TEMP variable applies to any system where an application
uses a Microsoft Access database. Express for Windows does use Access. A
valid TEMP variable specifies a valid directory path - i.e. the drive and
directory specified must exist. |

This solution was given to us by another tech. It may be that, in doing this, he actually recreated the solution detailed as Solution #1. This customer had upgraded from a Netware® 3.11 system to Netware 3.12. Not all of the 3.12 drivers and patches were applied. The tech obtained those and installed them. What he reported to us was that the install then
worked and Express was running fine. All the workstations were using the
default System Login script. If that is the case, the original problem could
have been with the login script and not with the drivers. |
