'Error 91 - Object Variable Not Set' Occurs While Starting Express for Windows™

Problem:

This error may occur while attempting to start Express for Windows.

Error 91 - Object Variable Not Set

It indicates that the database failed to open (or prematurely closed) for some reason.

Solution 1:

This error is almost always preceded by another error message of some type.  Generally it will be a General Protection Fault message or, possibly, and Invalid Page Fault message.

Attempt the operation again and record all error messages that are displayed.

Troubleshooting should usually be based on the original error message, not the Error 91 message.

Solution 2:

Another possibility (to be considered after Solution 1) is that the error is caused due to a memory error.  Memory errors can have many possible causes. Try these in the order listed.

  • Close all other Windows applications that may be open.

  • Close and restart Windows.

  • Use the MEM /C | MORE command in DOS to check what is in memory and see how much conventional memory is available. Check the Largest Executable Program Size. Anything below 525K is probably insufficient for Express to run successfully.

  • TSRs - Terminate and Stay Resident programs may be running. Check the AUTOEXEC.BAT for loading of these. Also, the WIN.INI may install these in the [Windows] section on the lines Run= or Load=

If the error occurs while attempting some operation (such as printing, etc) after Express has been successfully started,

  • Make sure all Express windows are closed before attempting the operation.

  • Make sure that all groups have been saved and that the View/Edit request window is not open.
