Error 53 - "Invalid Path"

Error 53 - "Invalid Path"

Problem:

The following error message is displayed while attempting to communicate in Express for Windows™

  Error 53 - Invalid Path

Cause #1: Some subdirectories may be missing from the Express for Windows directory. If you have recently done a RESTORE of your hard disk or a RESTORE of the Express program some empty subdirectories may not be restored by the backup software. For example, the directory for \OUTBOUND and \INBOUND in Express for Windows are empty 99.9% of the time. If a system backup was done, then that backup was used to do a RESTORE,  the \OUTBOUND and \INBOUND directories would not be restored as subdirectories because they were empty. That would result in an INVALID PATH error while communicating.

Cause #2: Necessary files are missing. One customer we encountered had copied the program from one computer to another. They had copied only the files in the \AMSEXPW or \EXPRESSW directory - not the .DLL and .VBX files that are required in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

Cause #3: You may be using a program that maintains files and directories. If a directory is empty, some of these programs will delete it. Missing directories will cause the Invalid Path error when Express tries to access those directories to read or write data.

Cause #4: Program is being run on a workstation using Windows NT® Workstation or Windows 2000 operating system instead of Windows 95 or 98.

Solution for Cause 1:
  1. Create the subdirectories from DOS using the MD command to make the directories.

For example:

  • Change directories to the Express for Windows directory. This is usually \AMSEXPW or \EXPRESSW

  • Then type :

  • MD INBOUND

  • MD OUTBOUND

  1. Change directories to \AMSEXPW \ INBOUND ( or \EXPRESSW\INBOUND )and then type:

  • MD TMP

This recreates INBOUND, OUTBOUND, and INBOUND \ TMP.

Solution for Cause 2:

Check to see if needed files are missing. The most likely culprits are MT.EXE and MTW.EXE. However, it is a good idea to confirm all files in the \AMSEXP or \EXPRESSW directory.

If the error 53 occurs along with "Decompression Errors", check to make sure that the RDCWIN.DLL file is present in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.

Solution for Cause 3:

If you have a program that attempts to manage your directories by removing empty ones, you will continue to encounter problems with Express for Windows.  You can recreate the empty directories (see Solution 1) but as long as the application is active the problems will occur each time the directories are removed.

Solution for Cause 4:
  • Check your Express for Windows version and make sure it is current.   If you do not have  Express for Windows version 3.10, contact iiX Customer support for new software. You may email your requests to: iiX Customer Support

  • The person using Express on the workstation must have Administrative rights to the folders in which Express is installed.  Express creates and deletes temporary files each time communications is run. The users profile must include the permissions to create, modify, and delete files throughout the Express for Windows subdirectory structure.
