Error 3050 - "Couldn't Lock File; SHARE.EXE is not Loaded"

Error 3050 - "Couldn't Lock File; SHARE.EXE is not Loaded"

Problem:

The following error message is displayed while booting up your machine:

Error 3050 - "Couldn't Lock File; SHARE.EXE is not Loaded"

This error may occur when the user's system is being booted without either SHARE.EXE or VSHARE.386 installed. Express for Windows™ requires SHARE.EXE or VSHARE.386 to be installed.

Solution 1:

Modify the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add the SHARE command.

The suggested command to start SHARE.EXE is:

  • LH C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE /L:500 /F:5100

This command is added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. LH tells the system to load SHARE in upper memory, not conventional memory. Note that the LH is optional but suggested. The /L:500 sets locks to 500 and the /F:5100 sets file space to 5100. These settings are recommended minimums based on the suggested requirements for Microsoft Access®.  C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE is the path to the file on most systems.   It could be different on yours.

Solution 2:

Modify the SYSTEM.INI file so that VSHARE.386 is loaded when Windows® starts. (This is not required for Windows 95® because Win95 does this automatically.)

Important!! - Make a backup copy of the SYSTEM.INI file before attempting to edit it!!!

(If you don't know how, type COPY SYSTEM.INI SYSTEM.BAK . If there are problems with the SYSTEM.INI file after the system is rebooted, SYSTEM.BAK can be renamed to SYSTEM.INI )

Check the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to see if VSHARE.386 is present on the system already. If it is, add the following line to the [386ENH] section of the SYSTEM.INI file:

  • Device=VSHARE.386

If VSHARE.386 does not exist in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, you can copy the file from the \AMSEXPW directory to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and use the above command in the SYSTEM.INI file. Or, you may elect to leave the VSHARE file in the \AMSEXPW directory and use the following command in the SYSTEM.INI file:

  • Device=x:\<Express Directory>\VSHARE.386

where x: is the drive on which Express is loaded.  <Express Directory> is usually \AMSEXPW or \EXPRESSW.
