Error 3041 - "Incompatible Database Version"

Error 3041 - "Incompatible Database Version"

Problem:

The following error message ocurres while attempting to start Express for Windows™:

Error 3041 - "Incompatible Database Version"

This happens when Windows® opens a copy of the VBDB300.DLL file that is older, and therefore supports fewer functions, than the copy that Express for Windows uses.

Solution 1:

The system may have two VBDB300.DLL files.

  • Exit Express

  • Open a DOS window

  • Type CD\ to change to the root of C:

  • Type DIR VBDB300.DLL /S to search C: for all copies of the file.

  • Rename any copies of VBDB300.DLL found in any directory other than C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM to VBDB300.OLD.

  • Restart Windows.

  • Restart Express for Windows.

Solution 2:

If Express still does not start after executing Step 1, or if there was no extra VBDB300.DLL, check the date stamp on the VBDB300.DLL that resides in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If the date is earlier than 3/24/94, Express will not work. If you view the properties of the VBDB300.DLL file, the version should be 03.00.529 or greater.

  • Rename the existing copy of VBDB300.DLL to VBDB300.OLD

  • Rerun the Express SETUP.

    • For standalone installs, reinstall the disks.

    • For network installs, rerun the Workstation setup.

Solution 3:

If Express still does not start after executing Step 1, and the date of VBDB300.DLL in step 2 was newer than 3/24/94, check the version number of VBDB300.DLL.

  • Start Explorer

  • Locate VBDB300.DLL in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

  • Right click on the file and choose Properties

  • Click on the "Version" tab.

  • The version number in File Version should be 03.00.529 or greater. If not, rename the file and rerun Express setup.
