Unable to Replace (or Copy) .DLL files while installing Express for Windows™

Unable to Replace (or Copy) .DLL files while installing Express for Windows™

Problem:

An error occurred during Express installation that stated the install program could not replace a .DLL file.

Solution:

Unable to Replace DLL File:

  • Make note of the .DLL file that Express could not replace or load.

  • Cancel the install and close Windows® completely.

  • Restart Windows and open a DOS window.

  • Rename the specific .DLL file.

    • For example: If the file that could not be replaced was COMMDLG.DLL, rename COMMDLG.DLL to COMMDLG.OLD. The file should be located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

  • Reinstall Express for Windows.

Unable to Copy DLL File:

When the installation is unable to copy (not replace) a DLL file in version 2.20b or earlier, the following procedure may be used to manually copy the compressed file from the iiX diskette to the drive:

  • Locate the compressed copy of the file on the installation diskette (on disk 1 or disk 3). The compressed copies of .DLL files can be recognized by the extension .DL_

  • Copy the file to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and expand it using the DOS expand function - EXPAND.EXE. ( On Windows 95 systems, EXPAND.EXE is not present unless they have loaded the supplementary DOS functions from the Windows 95 installation CD. There are instruction on Microsoft Technet for this. )

  • Restart Windows or Windows 95 and begin the installation again.

Please note: Express versions 2.30 and later do not have the individual compressed files on the diskettes. If a system is unable to load a particular DLL file, you might try the installation on another system and then copy the DLL file onto a disk and then copy it onto the problem PC.  Otherwise, send a new copy of the software.
