Express for Windows™ Fails to Start - Various Symptoms or Errors May Occur

Express for Windows™ Fails to Start - Various Symptoms or Errors May Occur

Problem 1:

An unusual error message is displayed when attempting to start Express for Windows.  One example was: Error 3044 - Invalid Use of Null.

Other symptoms might include rebooting of the workstation, or asking the user to login to the network again.  In some cases programs other than Express may start.

Solution 1:

If there is an Express for Windows icon on the desktop, right click on it.

  • Choose Properties

  • Click on the Shortcut tab

  • Make sure the path on the line labeled Target: is correct.  It should point to a path that ends with AMSEXPW.EXE . (We have found instances where the target pointed to files that had nothing to do with Express.)

Problem 2:

Express fails to start. The Express "splash" screen (map screen) is displayed and does not change - or -  no Express screen is displayed.

  • If you click the Express icon again, it may say "Express is Already Running".

  • If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del (once and only once!), the Close Program box may say that Express is Not Responding.

Solution 2:

Is the computer running a virus shield or virus scanning software?  If so:

  • Shut down and restart Windows®

  • Disable the virus shield or virus scanning software.

  • Launch Express again.
