Express for Windows™ Error: GetDBVersion Failed. Database upgrade failed. "Incompatible Database Version"

Express for Windows™ Error: GetDBVersion Failed. Database upgrade failed.
"Incompatible Database Version"

Problem:

This error could occur when installing Express for Windows version 2.30 (or greater). A message box pops up that states "Upgrading Database" and then the error message would appear.

Solution 1:

The system may have two or more VBDB300.DLL files. The first one may be in any directory and the second in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. To check for this, do the following:

  • To search in DOS:

    • Change to a C:\> prompt (the root of C)

    • Type: DIR VBDB300.DLL /S  and press the ENTER key.   All copies of the file VBDB300.DLL will be listed along with what directory they are in.  (This may take several seconds to several minutes - depending on the size of the C: drive and the speed of the system.)

    • Rename any copies of the VBDB300.DLL file that are NOT located in the  \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to VBDB300.OLD and restart Windows.

    • Reinstall Express for Windows.

  • To search in Windows® 95/98

    • Restart Windows..

    • After Windows restarts, click the Start button.

    • Choose the Find option

    • Choose the Files or Folders option. A box titled Find: All Files is displayed.

    • Type VBDB300.DLL in the blank for Named

    • Type C:\  in the blank space for Look In:

    • Make sure the box for Include Subfolders is checked.

    • Click on the Find Now button. The system will list all copies found of the file VBDB300.DLL. (This may take several seconds, depending on the speed of the system).

    • Rename any copies of VBDB300.DLL that are NOT  located in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory to VBDB300.OLD.

    • Reinstall Express for Windows.

Solution 2:

If Express still does not start after executing Solution 1, or if there was/were no extra VBDB300.DLL, check the date stamp on the VBDB300.DLL that resides in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

If the date is prior to: 3/24/94, rename the file and reinstall Express.

If the date of the file is 3/24/94, make sure that the size is 95200.  If it is smaller than 95200, it is possible the file failed to expand properly when it was installed.  Rename the file and reinstall Express.

Solution 3:

VBDB300.DLL may be corrupt.

  • Try reinstalling Express after renaming the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VBDB300.DLL to VBDB300.OLD
    -or-

  • Try copying VBDB300.DLL (from a system that is working) into the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

Solution 4:

If the error occurs at the end of the installation - during the Upgrading Database step - check the \EXPRESSW\DATA or \AMSEXPW\DATA directories to see if the EXPRESS.MDB and EXPRESS.LDB files exist.

If those files do not exist, but there is a TEMP.MDB file, try renaming TEMP.MDB to EXPRESS.MDB. Also, rename the TEMP.LDB file to EXPRESS.LDB.

Check the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to make sure that AMSEXPW.INI was created. If it was, try to start Express. (You may have to create a shortcut to the program if the Express icon was not created.)
