"File(s) Failed to Self Register: <filename>"
|
|
Problem: |
The error would most likely occur during or
immediately after the installation of Express for Browsers. The error would
read:
Files Failed to Self Register:
<filename>
(where <filename> is the name of the file that
is being reported as not registered).
The error could possibly be caused by files that
were in use by another application. Make sure all applications ( and TSR
programs ) are closed or disabled. (Hint: Check the system tray
for things like virus programs, fax programs, etc).
If you are unable to determine if other
applications are open, restart the system in Safe Mode and install
Express for Browsers as a Standalone application. ( If you want to make the
software a shared network application, you can reinstall later as a Server
application once the Standalone installation is working properly.)
|
|
Solution 1: |
-
Uninstall Express for Browsers (through the
Add/Remove option in Control Panel).
-
Restart the system and attempt the
installation again - making sure that all other applications are closed or
inactive before beginning the installation.
-
If successful, stop here. If not successful,
proceed to Solution 2.

|
Solution 2: |
-
Uninstall Express for Browsers (through the
Add/Remove option in Control Panel)
-
Restart the system in Safe Mode
and install Express for Browsers as a Standalone application. It can be
reinstalled later as a Server application, if necessary.
-
If that is successful, stop here. Restart
Windows normally and proceed.
-
If installation in Safe Mode is not
successful, proceed to Solution 3.
|
|
Solution 3: |
-
Install (or reinstall) Internet Explorer 5. You may obtain a copy of IE5 from the Microsoft website, or install it
directly from the Express for Browsers CD. It is located at:
x:\IE5\IE5SETUP.EXE
(where x: is the drive letter of your CD drive)
-
If an error occurs during the installation of
IE5, stop. Reboot the system and proceed to Solution 4.
-
If IE5 has installs successfully, try to run
Express for Browsers. If you are successful, stop here. Otherwise,
proceed to Solution 4.
|
|
Solution 4: |
-
The original error message contained the name
of the file that could not be registered. Locate and rename that file.
For example, if the file was ODBC32.DLL, rename it to ODBC32.OLD.
-
Install Internet Explorer 5 again. If an error
occurs during the installation of IE5, stop. Contact iiX Customer Support
for additional assistance.
-
If Internet Explorer 5 installs successfully,
try to run Express for Browsers. If successful, stop. If error still
occur, contact iiX Customer Support.
