Error Message:  "Unable to Open Database"

Error Message:  "Unable to Open Database"

Problem:
This error can occur when attempting to start Express for Browsers. It could be preceded by an Error 3024 - Couldn't Find File or some other error message.

If it was preceded by another error, it is critical that the text of that error is noted.

Solution 1:
Unable to Open Database would indicate that the database was missing, damaged, or that a file needed to allow the database to open was missing or damaged.

  • If the Unable to Open Database message was preceeded by another error, the troubleshooting should be done based on the first error received.
  • If the error received first was 3024 - Couldn't Find File, the database file (Plus32.MDB) may have been moved, renamed, or deleted.
    • If PLUS32.MDB is missing, but the file PLUS32BK.MDB is present, copy PLUS32BK.MDB to PLUS32.MDB.
    • If neither file can be located, Express for Browsers will have to be reinstalled.
Solution 2:
Possible scenario:  You have multiple user profiles on a Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP workstation.   Each user has been given access and permissions for the local (Standalone) copy of Express for Browsers.  However, when you attempt to launch the application, you get an error that says: "Unable to Open Database".

Reason for error:  Every user who logs onto the machine must have Express Plus32  - Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) listed on the User DSN tab and Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb) listed on the Drivers tab of the ODBC or ODBC32 Administrator panel section of their Control Panel.    Installing ODBC or ODBC data sources for one user does not also install those for the other users who log in to that same computer.

If the Microsoft Access Driver is listed on the Drivers tab, but Express Plus 32 is not on the User DSN tab, it can be added one of two ways.

  1. Manually add it through the ODBC or ODBC32 option in the Window Control Panel.   (This method is suggested only if you already know how to perform this task.)
  2. Install Express for Browsers for each user while logged in as that user. (The user must have Administrators rights for the duration of the install process.)  The EfB installation will add the Data Source entry for Express Plus 32.
If the Microsoft Access Driver is not listed on the Drivers tab, you will need to install Express for that user so that Express can add the ODBC driver for Microsoft Access as well as the ODBC data source for Express Plus 32. Please note that each user will have to be given Administrator rights on the local machine during either of these processes.

This same solution would apply to Express for Browsers loaded as a Network application.   Each user with their own unique local login on an NT, 2000, or XP workstation will require the ODBC and ODBC data sources to be installed.

Solution 3:
If Solutions 1 and 2 do not resolve the problem, a possible culprit could be the file ODBCJT32.DLL.  This file is required to operate any Microsoft Access® database application.   Proceed as follows:

  • Restart Windows®
  • Search the system C: drive for all occurences of the file ODBCJT32.DLL.  If any copies are found in directories other than C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, rename them to ODBCJT32.OLD and then try reinstalling Express for Browsers again.
  • If the error still occurs, use Windows Explorer and check the file Properties of ODBCJT32.DLL.   Make sure the file is not marked as Hidden or ReadOnly.  Also check the version number on the Version tab.
  • If the error still occurs,
    • Restart Windows,
    • Rename the ODBCJT32.DLL file in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to ODBCJT32.OLD
    • Reinstall Express for Browsers.
