Hardware Requirements

The following sections discuss the recommended hardware requirements to run Express efficiently.

Computer System

Express for Windows requires:

  • An IBM compatible 486 computer or better
  • 8mb of memory
  • An additional amount of diskspace required to store requests and reports is determined by how many you do daily and how long you keep them on your hard drive. 5-10mb of hard drive diskspace should be sufficient in most cases.
  • A mouse is not required for basic operation but is required to take full advantage of Windows features such as icon selection, etc.

Modem

Express for Windows requires:

  • A V32bis or better Hayes or Hayes-compatible modem.
  • Depending on the method you use to communicate with the Data Center, the baud rate can run from 19200 to 57,600.

Telephone Line

An ''isolated'' telephone line must be available to the modem for the software to dial the Data Center. An isolated phone line means that the modem has access to a telephone line with a dial tone to dial out.

A telephone line can be shared with a FAX machine but the modem can only use the line when the FAX machine is not in use and visa versa. Call waiting cannot be active.

Express can be configured to dial special numbers if needed to get an outside line. For example, the software can be set up to automatically dial 9 to get an outside line.
